Dirt Bike Riding
Near Tecate

This is Baja 1000 territory. The canyons between Tecate and Valle de Guadalupe are some of the most legendary off-road terrain in the world. We ride it every week.

Tecate Is Where Baja Racing Was Born

Tecate isn't just a border town with a brewery. It's ground zero for Baja off-road racing. The SCORE Tecate Baja 500 and Baja 1000 — the most famous off-road races on the planet — have run through the canyons and mountains around Tecate since the late 1960s. The terrain east and south of Tecate is a mix of high-desert canyon country, rocky mountain passes, and wide-open valleys that have tested the world's best riders for over half a century.

When riders say they want "the Baja experience," this is what they mean. Not a beach ATV circuit. Not a vineyard path. The raw, rocky, demanding terrain that earned this peninsula its reputation. And the best of it is within 30–45 minutes of our base in Valle de Guadalupe.

30 Minutes from Tecate to Our Base

From Tecate (Mexico side): Take Highway 3 west toward Ensenada. Valle de Guadalupe is about 30 minutes down the road. Our base is at km 70 on the Carretera Federal Ensenada. The drive itself passes through some of the terrain we ride — you'll see the canyon walls and ridgelines from the highway and know exactly what you're about to get into.

From the US via Tecate border crossing: The Tecate port of entry is significantly smaller and faster than Tijuana/San Ysidro. Wait times are typically 5–20 minutes going south, and return waits are usually under 30 minutes even on weekends. This makes Tecate the preferred crossing for riders coming from eastern San Diego County, Riverside, or the Imperial Valley. From the Tecate border, it's a straight 30-minute drive west on Highway 3 to our base.

Pro tip: If you're coming from San Diego, consider crossing at Tecate instead of Tijuana. The drive from San Diego to Tecate border takes about 60 minutes via CA-94 East through beautiful backcountry. The border crossing is fast and calm. Then it's 30 minutes to our base. Total: 90 minutes with a fraction of the Tijuana stress.

Trail Access from the Tecate Side

Tecate-Valle canyon corridor: The stretch of Highway 3 between Tecate and Valle de Guadalupe cuts through a series of canyons with trail access on both sides. Rocky creek beds, steep canyon walls, and switchback trails that climb from the valley floor to the ridgeline. This is intermediate to advanced terrain and features heavily in our full-day routes.

Sierra de Juárez foothills: East of Tecate, the terrain opens into high-desert foothills with long-distance trail access. Sandy washes, open stretches, and the kind of big-landscape riding that makes Baja legendary. Advanced riders with full-day bookings can access routes that run deep into this terrain.

Baja 1000 reconnaissance trails: Some of the trails we ride share alignment with historical Baja 1000 reconnaissance routes. These aren't race courses — they're the trails that race teams use to scout and train on. The geological features are identical: the same rock types, the same soil composition, the same elevation profiles. If you've watched Baja 1000 footage and thought "I want to ride terrain like that," this is your chance — at a pace that's appropriate for your skill level, with a guide who keeps you safe.

The terrain between Tecate and Valle de Guadalupe is also featured in our Triangle Route — a full-day ride that covers all three regions.

More Than a Border Crossing

Tecate has a charm that Tijuana doesn't. It's a small mountain town with a main plaza, excellent street food, craft bakeries, and of course the Tecate brewery (tours available). Many riders who cross at Tecate build in time for a taco stop and a cold Tecate beer before or after the ride. The town also has several motels and Airbnbs if you want to stay overnight and do a two-day riding trip.

For the full route and logistics breakdown, see our San Diego to Valle de Guadalupe driving guide — it covers both the Tijuana and Tecate crossing options.
