Route: Take the Ensenada toll road (Mex 1-D) south along the coast. Three toll booths, ~$7-8 USD total. Exit at Ruta del Vino / Highway 3 before Ensenada. Follow Highway 3 inland to km 70. Paved highway the entire way.

The Tijuana–Ensenada toll road is one of the most scenic coastal drives in Baja. Beach towns, clifftop views, and rolling hills before you turn inland toward the vineyards.

From TIJ Airport: Flew in via Volaris or VivaAerobus? About 90 minutes to our base. Crossed via CBX bridge from San Diego? Same 80-minute drive south.

Pro tip: Leave before 8:00 AM to avoid the morning buildup heading south. Toll road is usually clear but the merge from the city can get congested on weekends.

The Perfect Tijuana Day Trip

Tijuana is a gateway city — the real experiences are outside it. Here's a sample day:

7:30 AM — Leave Tijuana, hit the toll road south

9:00 AM — Arrive, gear up, start training

9:30 AM – 1:30 PM — Ride (or half-day for a shorter session)

2:00 PM — Lunch at a Valle restaurant, maybe a glass of wine

4:00 PM — Drive back to Tijuana or continue to Ensenada

The ride + wine country lunch combo is our most popular recommendation from Tijuana. Adrenaline in the morning, relaxation in the afternoon.

Crossing the Border for a Ride

Coming from San Diego? Our driving guide covers the border crossing, insurance, and route in detail. Key points: passport required, get Mexican vehicle insurance online ($15-25/day from Baja Bound), cross early.

With SENTRI/Global Entry, border adds 20-30 min total. Without it, plan an extra 1-2 hours for the return, especially Sunday afternoons.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tijuana

Valle de Guadalupe is about 110 km south of the Tijuana border — roughly 80 minutes by car via the toll road (Highway 1D to Ensenada, then Highway 3 inland). The drive is scenic, especially once you turn off the coastal highway and head into the valley past vineyards and rolling hills.

Yes. The Cross Border Xpress (CBX) connects the Tijuana airport to a terminal on the US side in Otay Mesa. From the Tijuana airport, Valle de Guadalupe is about 90 minutes by car. If you are flying into TIJ, you can land, walk across, rent a car or arrange a ride, and be at our base by late morning.

Take the toll road (Highway 1D, the cuota). It is faster, smoother, and safer — about 45 minutes to the Ensenada turnoff where you pick up Highway 3 to Valle. The free road (1 Libre) follows the coast and adds 30–40 minutes with slower traffic through Rosarito and smaller towns. Tolls run about $8 USD total each way.

Yes. The toll road from Tijuana south is a modern highway used daily by thousands of commuters and tourists. Once you exit onto Highway 3 toward Tecate, you are in wine country — a well-traveled tourist corridor. Stick to daytime driving and you will have a smooth, uneventful trip.

Yes, but plan for a long day. Leave Tijuana by 7:00 AM to arrive by 8:30, ride from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, grab lunch in the valley, and head back by 3:00 PM. You will be back in Tijuana by 4:30 PM. Factor in border wait times for the return to the US — Tijuana crossings can run 1–3 hours in the afternoon.

Getting Through the Border Smart

The San Ysidro-Tijuana border crossing is the busiest land border in the Western Hemisphere. Crossing into Mexico is usually fast (15-20 minutes by car), but the return to the U.S. can range from 30 minutes to 3+ hours depending on the day and time. This is the single biggest variable in planning your trip from the Tijuana side.

Best strategy: Cross into Mexico early (before 8 AM on weekends, before 9 AM on weekdays). Book a morning ride with us. Head back toward the border by 2-3 PM to beat the evening rush. Or better yet — stay overnight in the valley and return Sunday morning when lines are shortest.

SENTRI / Global Entry: If you have either, the dedicated lane cuts your return crossing to 10-20 minutes regardless of time. If you're planning to cross regularly, the SENTRI enrollment ($122.25 for 5 years) pays for itself in one trip.

Alternative: Cross at Tecate. If the TJ border sounds stressful, drive east to the Tecate crossing instead. It's a 60-minute drive from San Diego, the crossing takes 10-15 minutes, and the route to Valle de Guadalupe is scenic mountain highway. The total drive time is similar to going through TJ, but the experience is dramatically calmer. See our Tecate guide.

Tijuana to Valle de Guadalupe — Route Details

Once you're through the border and on the Tijuana-Ensenada toll road (cuota), the drive is straightforward. The toll is approximately $170 MXN (about $10 USD) and gets you a fast, well-maintained highway along the coast. You'll pass through Rosarito and see the Pacific the entire way.

At approximately km 73, take the exit marked "Ruta del Vino" or "Tecate / Highway 3." From there it's a 20-minute drive through increasingly rural terrain — vineyards replace strip malls, mountains replace buildings, and by the time you reach our location at km 70, you'll forget you were in Tijuana 80 minutes ago.

The free road (libre) is an option if you want to save the toll, but it adds 30-40 minutes and passes through urban areas with traffic lights. We only recommend the libre if you're specifically wanting to stop in Rosarito or Puerto Nuevo on the way.
